Valve Adjustment

At 15000 miles the valve adjustment is supposed to be checked. Has any one had their valves need any adjustment at this mileage?

Cool no adjustment req'd

I'm not a motorcycle mechanic but, my understanding with the VN900 having hydraulic lifters that there was no requirement to perform any maintenance on the valves or valve clearance. A Dealer might be your best source for the "Warranty Answer".

I am pretty sure they are not hydraulic lifters. And yes check your valves to see if they need adjustment. It is recommended to do it every 15k so do it then.

Talking Overhead Cam

Hey guys,

The VN900 has overhead cams so, no lifters.

Some of the big Jap cruisers, Yamaha for one are using push rods now (backwards step) to keep the motor shorter for styling reasons but the
VN900 is SOHC. Definitely get clearances checked as recommended
or noise and potential damage are likely.

Sorry guys, my mistake. I've only got around 8K on my machine so haven't reached that section of the manual. Guess that's what's good about the forum.

i have the same bike, i checked mine at 14000 miles and i had to replace 4 shims, 2 on the front head and 2 on the rear. there was only .05ths of a change but i still brought them back into spec

900 customs supposedly have hydraulic tensioners...so it shouldnt got out of spec...however it needs to be checked to make sure

The 06 Classic has one over head cam per cylinder, with solid cam followers (lifters) and uses shims for adjustment. They do indeed need to be adjusted per the owners manual schedule to allow for cam, follower, and valve stem wear. If not adjusted the clearance will eventually be gone, the valve will not close tightly, the valve will leak, allowing extremely hot compustion gases to blow by, burning the valve or seat or both, to the point they will need to be replaced.

They have hydraulic cam chain tensioners. So thats just the chain. The valves are on their own. You still have to check the tolerances and change out shims. Too bad they couldn't have made it like 250 ninja where it is a matter of lossening a keeper nut and adjusting a screw. Then you don't have to run around looking for shims.

dang...and valve adjustments are an arm and a leg...my cb750 takes about 15 min for me to change valves.
