I know I'm repeating what's been posted before, but some of the info I read seems to be a little dated.
I read that the SuperTech filters were great, but now after searching for them, it seems they are no longer in production. I also read that the Bosch filter that fits this has a decent reputation. Basically, what I found was all on Advance Auto Parts' website and I wanted to see if you guys have any opinions about the two:
Oil Filter - K&N for $16 (There are two on their site, a chrome and a black one and I'm assuming the difference is solely aesthetic)
Oil - Castrol Power RS Racing 4T 10w-40 Fully Synthetic MC for $10/qt
I'm planning on changing around every 5k miles because it only hurts my wallet in the short-term when I use extra care!
Yes,it is a very good filter.I have used Shell Rotella oil in the past.I am back using Valvoline 10W40 motorcycle oil.I guess this is my favorite. It can be purchased at Walmart,Advance Auto, and I'm sure numerous other places.
After I retired from a real job, I worked PT at a Honda/Yamaha dealer, as I always had Gold Wings. My '06 VN900LT Classic takes the same filter as the 1500 & 1800 Gold Wing.
Curious why you think working at a Honda/Yamaha dealer isn't a real job? Im not offended just curious about experiences people have working at motorcycle dealerships.
There are about as many different recommendations as there are riders! I use Purolator PureOne oil filters, about $7 but often discounted from that, which in disassembly comparison tests often have been rated as best - (not their Powersport filters), on my VN900. Slightly longer than OEM, use washers as shims to allow clearance between the filter end and the rectifier/regulator bracket. Oil - after getting fed up with paying through the nose for specifically-labeled motorcycle oil I use Shell Rotella T6 synthetic 5w-40 - is JASO certified for motorcycle use, about $20.50 per gallon at Walmart.
I use Shell Rotella T-6 synthetic in my 2012 Vulcan 900 Classic...bought my bike used Dec. 2015. with 1450 miles. Now have 5380 miles. Changed oil & filter at 1900 & 4100 miles with a Fram 4017A oil filter. [was suggested to me to stop using FRAM oil filters].Any pros & cons to using Shell Rotella mentioned above!
No cons from me as I use Rotella T6. I change mine out with filter around 3000 miles.I use the K&N filter,I think the welded nut on the end is the bee's knee's, any old crescent wrench will take it off.
Shell 15w-40 or the T6 5w-40 is a great oil for sure. Keep using whichever you like with no worries. The fram filters are deadly as the internal construction can breakdown and send pieces thru the engine. I have seen cummins diesel 5.9L used in dodge rams fail from frams, and there was a bulletin to stop using them.
Not all frams are deadly, but some are. I will cut mine open and let you know. I have removed them from the two bikes in the sig. Just need the time to cut open.
try to use the wix 51358 filter, it's much better filter, the fram inside is cardboard and one report has cardboard pieces found inside the motor from the fram
The inside of the cheapest FRAM automotive oil filter is constructed of cardboard, but I don't know if that is true with the FRAM PH6017A motorcycle filter. Have you cut the filter open to see whats inside?
The FRAM PH6017A is around $6.50 at Walmart. The FRAM Extra Guard automotive filter constructed on the inside with cardboard and filter material is around $3.50. From my experience the quality of the filter is reflected in the price, but it might be the PH6017A is a higher price because they just don't make as many. Not sure, but next chance I get I will cut the PH6017A open and see how its constructed.
I like Mobil 1 10W-40 full synthetic motorcycle oil. Whatever oil you choose make sure it is formulated for motorcycles. I haven't picked up my 900 Classic LT yet, but I was going to use a Fram PH6017A oil filter when I do a oil and filter change. I chose the FRAM filter because I can easily find it at my local Walmart along with the motor oil.
From past experience I think the best oil filters are the one's sold at your dealership. They usually use pretty good filters. I would go to my Kawasaki dealer if it wasn't so far away.
Finally picked up my 900 Classic LT. I ended up using Valvoline 10W-40 Full Synthetic motorcycle oil and a FRAM PH6017A oil filter from Walmart. When I make it to my local Kawasaki dealer I will pick up a few OEM oil filters. I prefer OEM filters because there good quality and your not second guessing yourself about buying a good filter.
