Advice on Windshields

I ride a 2008 Vulcan 1500N Fi an I am ready to put a windshield on it. My reasoning for wanting one is that the wind kick my butt pretty badly. I use my bike as a commuter about 8 months out of the year. Here in Az, my work route is mostly open highway and usually windy.

I have not bought a windscreen yet because I have not found one that fits me. I am in a word, an Olgre. I am 6'6" and pushing 300#, so my bike looks big until I am sitting on it I have gone out an gotten measured for a windscreen a few times over the past few years, at different places, and I am consistently told that I need a 24" - 25" screen.

Needless to say, I have not found one made that size. However, the other day, I came across Clearview Shields. They make a windshield that is 22.5" and has a recurve on the top of the screen that helps push the wind up an additional couple of inches. This might actually work for me.

Unfortunately, they do not sell mounting hardware and state that their screens are made to fit OEM hardware. My bike does not come with an OEM windscreen that I am aware of.

Is there OEM Windcreens for the 2008 VN1500N?
Is there an equivalent mounting hardware?
Do you know of any other manufactures out there that have windscreens for people of my stature?

I sent Clearview Shields an email, but I have not heard back yet.

thanks for your feedback

You can get a Fire and Steel windshield made by Kawasaki. Or you can get an aftermarket from anywhere, really. I'm 6-4 and weigh 270 (I was 285!) and I have a standard 22" windshield and it works just fine. You want to be able to look over the top of it anyway. The top of the shield should be level with the bridge of your nose. If you still get buffeting with it (I don't with mine) you can add lowers.

Here's what i would do: sit on your bike where you're most comfortable. Most of us slouch a bit when we're cruising. Have someone with a tape measure get a measurement from the ground to the middle of your face right next to the bike. I'd be surprised if it wasn't in the 21-23" range.

I have a 07 1500 vulcan classic with a 17" windshield. I'm 6' and its too short for me. Any ideas where i can find a taller windshield without spending a fortune?

I am 5'8", have a factory Fire and Steel windshield and it set my eyeballs to bouncing.
Added lowers and they helped, but now it is in a grey area....if I am riding with the wind, OK, if into the wind, not so much.
Probably about 1" taller would work for me.
So, I do not think that you would be happy with the OEM windshield as it is.
Another consideration is the Laminar Lip, but, the looks???

What kind of helmet are you riding with? I ride with a half, but the first one I had I got terrible head buffeting. I got a different one and it stopped.

My shield is a factory F&S too, and I'm 6-4. Works great for me. Go figure.

The helmet is what they call a 3/4???
Windshields can vary so much...what works for one does not work for the other.
My last bike had had a small mickey mouse windshield and it was buffet free. Go figure!

Thanks for the feedback. I will get remeasured this evening on my way home. Can the Fire and Steel mounting hardware for the windshield be bought without the glass? I have not found a set yet and really do not want to spend the extra cash on a screen that I wont use.

Yes, it is subject to so many variables, that's for sure.

Maybe you could get a friend to let you try theirs?

I got my replacement shield at www.7jurock.com. My head was getting hammered with the oem shield. The new one really blocks the wind. They offer custom sizes with height up to 25" and width up to 26". It might be a little thicker that the OEM. So I had to replace the button head bolts.
