Spark plugs for 1998 Vulcan 1500 Classic

Hi everyone,

I've recently started riding 1998 Vulcan 1500 classic.

I would like to have your opinion regarding the correct spark plugs for this bikes.

The manual says its NGK-DPR5EA-9 (Was NGK-DPR7EA-9 for 96-97 models).

But guys here say that actually 5 may be too hot. I'm living in Arizona like climate so its pretty toasty here at summer and I'm much concerned by the possible engine overheat.

So it boils down to two questions:
* are you putting NGK-DPR5EA-9 as in manual?
* Is there is any time proven Iridium spark plug for this bike?

If you think your "guys there", are smarter than the owner's manual, then do what they suggest. This is the root of many problems, people thinking they are smarter than the engineers that designed the engine.

Go with what Bandit says. Sparkplug heat range has little to do with outside temperature. Check them after a while to ensure they are satisfactory.

Also, you could verify from an alternate source that the sparkplug number is correct.

OK, I'll try with the DPR5EA-9 plugs.

I'll update the topic if any problem arises.

Both owners and service manuals say DPR5EA-9. Did you mean something else?

I just typed in a request for the correct spark plug for your year model bike and the "5" is the answer I received.

My book for my 2006 1500 says to use the DPR6EA9 on my 2006. My limited research for your year model says to use the 5EA9. The "5" is the hotter plug and the difference between the 5 and 6 is determined by the length of the stroke for that particular engine. If your book calls for a specific plug then that plug or the same type on a cross reference would be the one to go with.

The manual was written by the folks that designed the engine for more than just a reference, but it's your bike........

Yeap, "5" is what my owner and service manual say.
Ordered a set of "5"s.
I hope to post "all OK" here after a weak of using them.
