They fall into cosmetic and or performance and some involve both at same time.

the only "MUST DO" is ride it and enjoy.

I started out with an 08 classic and I have only added parts to make it equal to an LT. (Bags, sissy bar, windshield, crashbar, Passenger Footboards and so on.)

1985 Honda Nighthawk 650 (First Bike)
2004 Vulcan 1500 Classic (First Big Bike)
2007 Vulcan 1600 Meanstreak (Love Affair)
1999 Yamaha 1100 V-Star Custom (Right Price at the Time)
2008 V2K Classic (Favorite Vulcan)
2014 HD Ultra Limited (Bells and Whistles)
Who would have thought I would grow up to become "Spatially Educated" and play Connect-the-Dots for a living.

Depends on what "path" you want to take the bike (looks and performance wise) and also your budget.

Most do the big three (new pipes, intake, fuel processor).

After that, other than perhaps a new front pulley, it's really all cosmetic.

One mod that's a "must" in IMHO is to replace the stock seat as it's a butt killer after more than an hour in the saddle. I went with a Russell "Day Long" seat on mine.

Working on pipes, got it narrowed down to few, as far as the intake dont have any ideas, and I guess until I get the pipes and the intake, I shouldnt need a processor.
