Mix and match tire brands and styles

My 2015 Vulcan 900 Classic LT was stolen in February and recently recovered.

The issue is, the scum bags that stole it burned off most of the rear tire tread so I need to replace the rear but not the front tire. The front tire had 4.8 mm of tread, where the rear has just three mm of tread. I read most every thread on this forum dealing with tires and think I might go with a Metzeler ME880 Marathon in the standard size of 180/70B-15 (76H) for the rear.

My question is "would I have any issues running the standard Dunlap front and the ME880 on the rear"?

The alternative would be to replace both front and rear tires but don't find the correct size 130/90-16 (67H front tire in the ME880 style, but do find it in the Metzeler ME888 Marathon Ultra. Any issues in mixing these two styles of the same brand?

Look on line revzilla has the 130-90-16 and also some other sites have it. The metzeler me 888 I love them, I run them on my 1700 nomad

Yes, I found the 130/90/16 for the front in the style ME888 but don't find the 180/70B-15 (76H) for the rear in the ME888 style.

I find the correct size for the rear in the ME880 style and the correct size for the front in the ME888 style, but neither style has both sizes. sorry for any confusion.

So what do you guys who run Metzeler's do on your 900 Classic's?

Hi AMO,

You are quite right, J&P does have exactly what I want and need for my 900 Classic in the ME888 line and there is an $88 rebate if I buy a set, so I will today.

So, who needs a Dunlap 404 130/90-16 front tire with 4.8 mm of tread?

Recently I tried the ME880, On the back of my 07 900 Custom, and I must say it's a decent tire. Obviously I've yet to see how it performs to it's limits (former sportbike rider in me talking there) but so far I've yet to find a single issue with it.

My rubber band front tire was badly dry rotted after sitting outside, so I just installed an Avon 21" on that, but in essence, don't be overly afraid to mix and match. At the track I've done that a few times, and even in the most extreme environments, I've yet to see any of these so called "cataclysmic events" happen that other riders some times speak of.

You'll be fine.

I decided to go for the old school look with wide white walls. so I replaced them both.

Went with Metzeler ME888 170/80-15 on the back and standard size ME888 on the front. The taller back tire will help some with the speedometer error.

They will be here in the next few days and I'll take some pictures when they are installed.
