So... anyone have any great insight on some great riding in the area? I don't mean links to those websites that show you the best routes (Been there, and took notes!). Wonder if any VulcanForums members live or have ridden in that eastern/southern Oklahoma area and had some insight. Pulling the trailer and tent camping in Checotah; and we'll ride out from there each day.
So, any tips? Great local non-chain, non-deep-fried-everything (I know, we're going awfully far south to expect otherwise! Ha!) eats?
From there you could head east into Arkansas and the Ouachita Mountains.
The only 'eats' I can recommend is 'Smokin' in Style' BBQ in Hot Springs, AR but at 200 miles it might be a little far. Be careful on weekends as the Ouachita National Forest will be thick with traffic.
We'll be out before the weekend. We're spending labor day weekend at Lake of the Ozarks with family. After a week on the motorcycle we're going to spend a weekend on the Jet Ski's and the Catamaran . Labor day weekend on the lake is going to be incredibly busy but, oh well.
I'll definitely check those out! Thanks for the pics!
Tallessee, AL and Tulsa, OK were both capitals of a large Creek Indian tribe (both names are derived from the original Indian name Talasi, or Tallasi). The Lake Eufaulas are about 90 miles from those cities. Probably TMI, but I find it interesting since I was born in Tulsa and grew up not too far from Tallessee and my first wife was born in Tallassee (there's a Trail of Tears involved there, too :frown2: ).
Went great. Got a modest 2,200 miles in in total. Went as far south as Paris, TX. Weather was pretty good, got hit with one deluge in Southern Oklahoma. Good weather, not too busy. Spent some time on a canoe on the lake. Really a great trip! Backs up a bigger trip we did back in June that had us exploring upstate NY, Toronto and Montreal. I'd say Paris, TX to Montreal, QC, CA is a pretty good spread for the year!
My general rule is that I don't repeat much of anything. Been there, done that, on to the next thing. One of my in-laws likes to say "But you liked that so much, why don't you go back?" Well, I never would've found it if I went back to the place I liked the year before! If ever I tell someone I'm buying a time share or a vacation home, contact the authorities; someone has kidnapped me and replaced me with a look-a-like! Just not my style. In the past 4 years I've been to more than a dozen U.S. states, two Canadian territories and three Mexican states. On a total of three motorcycles (Vulcan 900, Vulcan 1700 Vaquero, and a little Honda death trap I rented in Mexico).
But I did break that rule. We routed ourselves through Tahlequah, OK and stopped by Sam and Ella's Chicken Place.
And a couple "candid shops":
Dusty Oklahoma:
And, while we didn't stop in, I thought this sign on an (ironically very hipster-laden) coffee shop was pretty great. This place was, apparently, too hipster even for the Starbucks crowd:
Super cool! Makes me wish we'd gone to see it at night!
